Alessandra* never imagined that she, someone who once helped others escape abuse, would one day need the same support she provided for others. Years ago, she worked in our domestic violence shelter, offering guidance and hope to survivors. But when abuse crept into her own life, first through her husband, then again in another relationship, she found herself overwhelmed by fear and disbelief.

“It can happen to anyone,” she later reflected, realizing that even those who know the signs can feel trapped. Her husband’s abuse escalated to the point where Alessandra sought refuge in the very shelter where she once worked, all while still donating what she could. It was a painful, humbling chapter that marked the beginning of her personal fight for survival.

Leaving her husband was only the start. Determined to rebuild, Alessandra found herself drawn into another relationship that would eventually reveal its dark side. Her new partner’s charm faded, replaced by volatile, manipulative, and controlling behavior. When he threatened to kill her one terrifying night, Alessandra knew she had to act. She called the police, leading to his arrest. But even then, the legal system failed her, dismissing parts of her experience.

It was a crushing blow, leaving her feeling invisible and powerless. However, with the unwavering support of her Resilience advocate, she navigated the legal system, reinstated her no-contact order, and delivered her powerful victim impact statement in court.

“I realized I’m not just surviving anymore. I have a say in how this ends.”

The trauma of abuse left Alessandra grappling with deep wounds. In her search for healing, she turned to alcohol as a way to numb the pain, but it quickly became a dangerous escape. When she hit rock bottom, her body shaking and her faith faltering, she cried out to God for help. That very day, she made the decision to stop drinking, reclaiming and her health and sense of self.

Her recovery journey wasn’t easy, but it was transformative. Even within the recovery space, she faced challenges, including what she later recognized as the “13th step,” a pattern where predatory men prey on vulnerable women in recovery groups.

But Alessandra, ever resilient, refused to let this silence her. She reclaimed her voice once again. Through every struggle, Alessandra’s connection to Resilience became a lifeline.

“The moment I walked through those doors, something shifted,” she said. “I didn’t just survive; I started to heal. And that healing started the moment I realized I didn’t have to do it alone.”

Her advocate not only supported her but also made her feel seen, heard, and valued – experiences that had been missing from Alessandra’s life for too long. This profound support inspired her to transform her pain into purpose.

Alessandra’s journey didn’t end with her own case. Determined to use her voice to help others, she joined Resilience’s Survivor Advisory Council, becoming an advocate for systemic change. She spoke out about the failures of the legal system, the importance of education about consent and red flags, and the need for comprehensive support for survivors.

“The day I joined the Survivor Advisory Council was the day I stopped feeling powerless,” she said. “My story became something bigger than pain. It became purpose.”

Her work expanded beyond personal healing. Alessandra has become a vocal advocate for victims’ rights, emphasizing that the justice system must listen to survivors’ voices and experiences. She shares her story publicly to empower others and shed light on the realities of abuse.

“I’ve been through enough that now I can help others feel less alone,” she shares. Her message resonates with anyone who has felt trapped, silenced, or overlooked.

Alessandra’s faith and her community kept her grounded throughout her journey. “The world isn’t always kind, but there are people doing the work. There are strangers out there ready to support you, fight for you, and walk alongside you even when you can’t see the way forward,” she says. For her, advocacy isn’t just about changing systems – it’s about showing up for others and reminding them that they are never alone.

Today, Alessandra’s journey is a testament to resilience, courage, and hope. She’s a living example of how survivors don’t just escape abuse; they can reclaim their power, find healing, and lead others toward safety and justice. Through her advocacy, she continues to light the way for others, proving that with support, strength, and a refusal to be silenced, triumph is possible.
