Our Community is Grieving: A Message from Resilience
In the wake of multiple acts of devastating violence that occurred across Ottawa and Allegan counties over the weekend, we extend our deepest condolences to all those grieving these tragic losses.
“Our hearts are with the families, friends, classmates, neighbors, first responders, and entire communities impacted by these heartbreaking events. Tragedies like these affect far more than those directly involved. They leave lasting impacts on children, loved ones, schools, workplaces, and communities as a whole.” – Megan Hennessey, LMSW, Executive Director
While we do not comment on the details of specific cases, we remain committed to helping the community understand domestic violence, recognize warning signs, and access support and prevention resources.
Domestic violence is often misunderstood as a private issue that happens behind closed doors. In reality, it is a pattern of behaviors rooted in power and control that can have profound and far-reaching impacts. The effects of domestic violence extend beyond one household, affecting families, friends, schools, healthcare providers, first responders, workplaces, and entire communities.
These moments remind us that domestic violence is not an isolated issue. It is a community issue. Every person deserves to experience safety and respect in their relationships, and every survivor deserves to know that support is available. Through education, prevention efforts, reducing stigma around seeking help, and ensuring survivors have access to compassionate, trauma-informed services, we can work together to create safer communities for everyone.
Community-wide tragedies can be deeply traumatic, especially for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, children, first responders, and those who have experienced similar forms of harm. Even individuals who are not directly connected to these events may experience grief, fear, anxiety, or emotional distress.
Community members are encouraged to care for themselves and one another by checking in with loved ones, taking breaks from repeated exposure to distressing news coverage when needed, and seeking support if they are struggling.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic or sexual violence, feels unsafe, or has been impacted by recent events, confidential support is available. We provide free, trauma-informed services, including a 24/7 Help Line, safety planning, advocacy, emergency shelter, counseling, and connections to community resources.

Resilience remains committed to responding to survivors, reducing and preventing violence, and working alongside the community to build a future where every person can live free from violence.
